The Situation

The National Aviation Hall of Fame (NAHF) was established in 1962 and in 1964 was incorporated as a national entity by an act of Congress. Since that time, the NAHF has honored over 150 aviation and space leaders - pilots, teachers, scientists, engineers, inventors and others - by inducting them into the Hall of Fame. This prestigious list of notable aviation pioneers spans an entire century of achievement in aeronautics. NAHF inductees include Orville and Wilbur Wright, William Boeing, Charles Lindbergh, Amelia Earhart, James Doolittle, Alan Shepard, John Glenn, Chuck Yeager, Neil Armstrong, Frank Borman and others. The NAHF is the only exclusively aviation-related organization chartered by the Congress of the United States and is located adjacent to the United States Air Force Museum in Dayton Ohio. The NAHF's exhibits teach over 1 million visitors a year about the history, science, and wonder of flight, as seen through the achievements of National Aviation Hall of Fame enshrinees. Admission to the public is free. www.nationalaviation.org

The Challenge

The staff at NAHF needed a web solution that they could manage themselves. The NAHF is rapidly becoming a rich source of information about these tremendous pioneers  of Aviation. As the collection of information became larger, the staff was becoming burdened because they could not make the information readily available to researchers and the general public via the Internet. Additionally, the NAHF was looking for increased efficiency in it’s membership registration and fund raising activities.  Finally, the NAHF was looking to deploy a more robust online store to make souvenirs and Aviation related merchandise available outside the walls of the NAHF.

The Response

The e-solutions@work division of Digital Controls responded to to the needs of the NAHF by building a database driven web solution for them. This solution featured a browser based Content Management system that would allow the staff at the NAHF to post reference materials to the Internet, quickly and easily themselves without having to involve a web developer or contractor. Posting of this information quickly provides researchers and the casual Aviation enthusiast access to the most current data available on all the enshrinees. The solution also includes databases for tracking fund raising activities and allows for on-line registration of new members and renewing members of the Hall of Fame organization. General membership includes a membership certificate, yearly membership card and NAHF logo lapel pin. Members also receive the quarterly newsletter on Hall of Fame activities and a special invitation to the annual enshrinement ceremony.  Additional higher level of memberships include, Lifetime Level, and Organizational Patron Levels.  The final component of the new web solution for NAHF provides them with a database driven e-commerce site to allow on line ordering of souvenirs and NAHF merchandise.

The Result

As a result of the implementation of the new web solution, NAHF is able to post thousands of pieces of reference material to the Internet and has already increased revenues associated with new memberships and merchandise sales.  Just the simple fact of being able to post content themselves has allowed the NAHF to utilize the Internet in a new and exciting fashion to increase the awareness of their organization and to focus the spotlight even brighter on the giants of the Aviation industry. Additionally, on-line registration for the annual Enshrinee Ceremony is showing great promise to increase attendance at the NAHF’s annual showcase event.
